Langdons have used a satellite tracking system linked with Seven TranScan temperature recorders for some years but were unhappy with their previous service and equipment providers. After evaluating several alternatives they recently chose to switch to Seven TranScan for the provision of live web based temperature monitoring and vehicle location using their COOL TRACK system.
Langdons are a leading provider of temperature controlled logistics running a complex dual temperature (frozen and chilled) shared-user distribution operation. Their key requirement was to reduce the costs of claims by means of immediate access to internal temperature records throughout their 200+ vehicle fleet. In addition of course they wanted to improve operational efficiencies by using the vehicle location reports.
SMEG UK, the supplier of high specification kitchen appliances has been pleasantly surprised at the level of return on investment following the fitment of 16 Asset Track real-time vehicle tracking systems from Seven Eye.
Allpress Farms Limited is family business specialising in the production of onions and leeks, based in Chatteris Cambridgeshire. The company, through a carefully selected programme of varieties to ensure a progression of maturity throughout the season, typically yields 5000 tonnes of produce from their 275 hectares of arable land.
Harvesting is carried out using the latest rig technology which, coupled with dedicated refrigerated storage, ensures that Allpress leeks are among the cleanest, freshest and highest quality available. First class retailers and major supermarkets stock Allpress leeks with total confidence.
However, despite rigorous quality procedures an unexpected power supply failure on their main coldstore in 2006 resulted in some product spoilage. Immediate remedial action ensured that the loss was minimised but the incident prompted an investigation into the implementation of a monitoring system that would help ensure that similar problems did not occur in the future.
Operations Manager Stuart Threadgill explains, "We pride ourselves on the quality of our products and have always included regular operational checks throughout our production process. But the minor problem we experienced last year made us aware of our vulnerability to failures in the cold storage area, particularly when such problems occur out of normal working hours. Loss or spoilage of product, although rare, will always have an impact on our business and could affect future supply contracts. The total cost to us, therefore, might be many times that of the product lost.
Allpress utilise a refrigerated complex comprising 3 separate areas which totals 7200 cubic metres of storage capacity. The management team decided that the monitoring of all 3 stores from a single location together with the identification of door operation and fridge power failure detection were all essential requirements for any monitoring system that they would install.
